FABIANO VICTORIOUS at WEC 40
WEC 40- Wagnney Fabiano (12-1) vs. Fredson Paixao (8-3)
Wagnney Fabiano puts up another solid performance at WEC 40. Fabiano went up against Fredson Paixao Sunday night and delivered his 12th victory.
Early expectations were that Wagnney Fabiano could face Uriah Faber at WEC 40. Speculation was fueled by an interview with Tatame.com in which Fabiano said that he expected to face Uriah Faber, the WEC’s former featherweight champion at WEC 40.
Instead Fabiano landed another very tough opponent, Fredson Paixao. The Nova Uniao fighter came in to WEC 40 looking for his eighth straight victory. (all eight by way of submission.)
Overall, WEC 40 was a solid night of fights, and many went the distance. Unfortunately for Fabiano and fans, he was stuck so far down on the card his fight wasn’t even televised. We were told that there were problems associated with the planning of the fight card, little comfort to the International Fight League’s former featherweight champion. Either way Wagnney Fabiano is a pro and came to win.
Fabiano came out with a high kick and a barrage of punches, setting the stage for a stand-up regiment undoubtedly part of the well rounding of his game. Fabiano kept the fight primarily standing for the first two rounds, not relying on his exceptional jiu jitsu skills. Paixao took a few good shots and winds up bleeding from his forehead. After a solid thigh kick from Fabiano, the fighters lock up in a clinch that, much to the crowds dismay, lasts out the first round.
The second round begins with Fabiano throwing punch kick combinations. After blocking a high left kick, Paixao engages a clinch that threatens to bore everyone to death, Ref Scott Fisher separates them. Paixao delivers a substantial low kick but succumbs to a Fabiano takedown that ends up with Wagnney in side control. Paixao manages to get back to his feet only to face a solid left that leaves Paixao disoriented. The rounds ends without further excitement.
The final round begins with a Fabiano right and then a standing exchange. Fabiano lands another solid low kick and goes for the take down. Paixao looks for a guillotine but Fabiano is not phased and quickly escapes. Fabiano, now standing is threatened by Paixao’s upkicks and the fighters return to their feet. Fabiano unloads a flurry of punches that shake up Paixao but won’t finish him. Another good right from Fabiano brings the fight to an end.
All three judges score the fight 30-27 Fabiano.
